چکیده

It is possible to move, split, merge, and mix liquids in micro fluidic devices by applying spatially varying electric fields that effectively change the surface tension at specific spatial locations. The phenomena is brought about by a competition between surface tension effects (that cause the droplet to bead up because it has been placed on a hydrophobic surface) and electrical forces in the underlying solid dielectric (which attempt to enlarge the liquid/solid contact area so as to relieve electro static forces). In this paper we primarily present an energy minimization model for the equilibrium shape of electrically actuated droplets. By including a realistic amount of liquid resistance, this model captures the effect of contact angle saturation and predicts the experiment data we observe in the UCLA devices. At the close of the paper we also outline our results in modeling the dynamics of the moving, splitting, and merging droplets. This part includes modeling of the 2phase low-Reynolds fluid dynamics with electrically actuated boundary conditions.

Size Effect Impact on the Mechanical Behavior of an Electrically Actuated Polysilicon Nanobeam based NEMS Resonator

In this paper, the dynamic response of resonating nano-beams is investigated using a strain gradient elasticity theory. A nonlinear model is obtained based on the Galerkin decomposition method to find the dynamic response of the investigated beam around its statically deflected position. The mid-plane stretching, axial residual stress and nonlinear interaction due to the electrostatic force on ...

Numerical Solution for Gate Induced Vibration Due to Under Flow Cavitation

Among the many force s to which hydraulic structures are exposed to, the forces induced by cavitation incident are of typical hydrodynamic unknown forces. The aim of this study is to define these forces as coupled fluid-structure interaction under two dynamic effects. The first dynamic effect which incorporates facilities for dealing with cavitation fluid is based on the appearance and bursting...

Application of Piezoelectric and Functionally Graded Materials in Designing Electrostatically Actuated Micro Switches

In this research, a functionally graded microbeam bonded with piezoelectric layers is analyzed under electric force. Static and dynamic instability due to the electric actuation is studied because of its importance in micro electro mechanical systems, especially in micro switches. In order to prevent pull-in instability, two piezoelectric layers are used as sensor and actuator. A current amplif...

Pull-in behavior analysis of vibrating functionally graded micro-cantilevers under suddenly DC voltage

The present research attempts to explain dynamic pull-in instability of functionally graded micro-cantilevers actuated by step DC voltage while the fringing-field effect is taken into account in the vibrational equation of motion. By employing modern asymptotic approach namely Homotopy Perturbation Method with an auxiliary term, high-order frequency-amplitude relation is obtained, then the infl...

Frequency-dependent Transient Response of an Oscillating Electrically Actuated Droplet

The transient response of a millimeter-sized sessile droplet under electrical actuation is experimentally investigated. Under DC actuation, the droplet spreading rate increases as the applied voltage is increased due to the higher electrical forces induced. At sufficiently high DC voltages, competition between the electrical actuation force, droplet inertia, the retarding surface tension force ...
